The son of former Canberra Raiders and New Zealand Rugby League player John Lomax, Tyrel Lomax switched to Rugby Union. In 2014, Lomax made his Australian Schoolboy debut and the following year, earnt his first selection for the Australian Under-20 side in 2015. In 2016, Lomax signed his first Super Rugby contract for the Melbourne Rebels making 13 appearances for the side. The Highlanders' signed Lomax in September 2017, as well as the New Zealand Māori side announcing Lomax had made the end of year tour squad.
