Matt Whaanga, a South Otago High School Alumnus, started his professional career playing for Otago in 2018. In 2021 Whaanga moved provinces to Southland where he has been playing for the last two years. 

Whaanga made his Super Rugby debut for the Highlanders in round 14 of the 2023 season due to a late injury in the team.
