Jake Te Hiwi was raised in Dunedin and attended Otago Boys' High School. 

He was named in the 2022 New Zealand Under 20's side a debuted for Otago in the same year. 

Due to injury Te Hiwi made his Super Rugby debut in 2023 against the Chiefs but suffered an ankle injury in his second game which ended his season.
