Tongan-born Folau impressed with his Hawkes Bay season in the 2021 NPC season and picked up the Duane Monkley Medal for the Most Valuable Player. He has a great intuitive feel for the game, creating the ability to spark his team on attack. Although not a big man, he really enjoys the physical parts of the game and this is evident in the way he approaches defence.
Folau has since picked up two caps for the All Blacks after debuting in the second test of the Steinlager Series against Ireland in 2022 and in 2023 picked up another two caps for the All Blacks XV.
In 2025, Fakatava continued to be a dynamic presence for the Highlanders, known for his explosive speed, creativity, and ability to ignite attacking opportunities.
His performances earned him a call-up to the AUNZ Squad for the match against the British & Irish Lions, and at the end of 2025 he earned selection for the All Blacks XV, recognising his skill and playmaking ability.
Looking ahead to 2026, Fakatava will aim to build on his momentum and further establish himself as a key playmaker for the Highlanders.
