Shannon Frizell, originally from Tonga, is a loose forward with excellent aerial skills. Frizell had an excellent 2016 and 2017 season with the Tasman Mako. Shannon had a sensational rookie year in 2018, after starting from the bench he forced his way into the starting 15 and became a part of the very strong loose forward contingent that the Highlanders possessed in 2018. He was a bolter in the All Blacks June Test Match window and made four appearances during the Rugby Championship. Unfortunately, he succumbed to shoulder injury and missed the end-of-year tour but recovered by getting a late call up to the Rugby World Cup squad in 2019.
Shannon was awarded the Rookie of the Year award in 2018 and has since been named Highlanders Forward of the year for the past two seasons. He was again rewarded for another dominant 2021 season by being selected by the All Blacks upcoming internationals.
