Josh Whaanga is a dynamic 20-year-old back originally from Balclutha, South Otago. 

Josh was selected in the 2024 NZ Under 20's squad as well as captained the 2024 Highlanders Under 20's team during the annual Super Rugby U20's Tournament in Tāupo. 

Whaanga, although only young, has proved his ability and will be a great asset to the Highlanders squad. 

Josh made his rookie Super Rugby debut off the bench against the Crusaders in 2025, showcasing his pace and skill in key moments.

He also had a strong 2025 NPC season with Otago, gaining valuable experience and continuing to develop his game as a promising young back. Heading into 2026, he will be looking to gain more experience and further develop his impact in the Highlanders backline.
