Assistant Coach
David Kidwell joins the Highlanders coaching group ahead of the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season as Defence Coach, bringing a wealth of international experience across both rugby league and rugby union.
Born in Christchurch, Kidwell enjoyed a decorated playing career in rugby league, representing the Kiwis 25 times and playing over 250 first-grade games for clubs including the Adelaide Rams, Parramatta Eels, Melbourne Storm, and South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Following his playing career, Kidwell transitioned into coaching and has built an impressive résumé. He was Head Coach of the New Zealand Kiwis from 2016–2018 and later moved into rugby union, where he served as Defence Coach for Argentina during their 2023 Rugby World Cup campaign that saw the Pumas reach the semi-finals. He has also spent time coaching with Japan and the Leicester Tigers in England’s Premiership.
Kidwell brings a strong defensive mindset and a reputation for instilling toughness and clarity in team systems. Returning home to New Zealand, he is excited to contribute to the Highlanders’ growth and help shape a resilient and disciplined defensive unit heading into the 2026 season.
