Highlanders Appoint Jimmy Maher as Assistant Coach

20 October 2026

The Highlanders are pleased to announce the appointment of Jimmy Maher on a one year contract as Highlanders Assistant Coach, further strengthening the Club's coaching group ahead of the upcoming 2027 DHL Super Rugby Pacific season.

Maher joins the Highlanders after leading North Harbour to an impressive turnaround in the 2026 National Provincial Competition (NPC) campaign. Under his guidance North Harbour climbed from last place in 2025 to a fourth place finish in 2026, before their season ended with a quarter-final loss to Taranaki.

Maher's rugby journey began as a player, representing Counties Manukau in 40 matches between 2004 and 2007, while also earning selection in the New Zealand Sevens programme.

Following his playing career, he transitioned into coaching through Auckland club rugby before spending several years coaching in Japan. Upon returning to New Zealand, Maher joined Counties Manukau as an assistant coach before taking on the Head Coach role at North Harbour, where he has overseen the union's recent resurgence.

Highlanders Head Coach Jamie Joseph said Maher's experience and coaching philosophy made him an excellent fit for the organisation.

"Jimmy’s coaching expertise, leadership qualities, and a genuine passion for player development were key skills we were looking for in this appointment . It’s a role that will help drive an enhanced development mentality within the team with the goal of continual player improvement throughout the season. In his coaching career so far he has demonstrated the ability to connect with players, challenge them to improve, and help create environments where individuals and teams can thrive. We are excited about the energy he will bring to our programme .”

Maher said he was looking forward to joining the Highlanders and becoming part of the organisation.

"The Highlanders have a proud history, a passionate supporter base, and a reputation for developing quality players and people. The opportunity to be part of that is one I am incredibly excited about. I am looking forward to working alongside the coaching group, staff, and players to build towards the future and continue to strive for success."

Maher will commence in November and will work closely with the existing coaching team across all aspects of the Highlanders' rugby programme.

The Highlanders look forward to welcoming Jimmy and his family to the club and the wider southern rugby community.
