HIGHLANDERS SECURE TALENTED YOUNGSTERS
21 August 2025
The Highlanders are proud to announce the signing of three standout young players; Dylan Pledger, Stanley Solomon and Josh Tengblad, all of whom recently represented New Zealand at the World Rugby U20 Championship in Italy.
Both Pledger and Tengblad have come through the Highlanders John Jones Steel High Performance Programme and have led the Highlanders U20 side over the past two seasons, a testament to their leadership, consistency, and growth.
Pledger, a mercurial halfback hailing from King’s High School in Dunedin, was a key figure in the New Zealand U20 campaign, showcasing his trademark tempo, pinpoint delivery, and tactical awareness. Known for his sniping runs and game control, Pledger has long been earmarked as a future prospect. He made his debut for the Otago NPC side last season and featured in their memorable win against Wellington at the weekend.
“Growing up in Dunedin, the Highlanders have always been the team I aspired to play for,” said Pledger. “To now have the chance to be part of the squad is a dream come true. I’m excited to keep learning and to challenge myself at the next level.”
Tengblad, a towering lock from Sacred Heart College in Auckland, brings physicality, set-piece presence, and a relentless work rate to the forward pack. At over two metres tall, he’s a genuine lineout weapon and a mobile, athletic second rower.
Signing with the Highlanders is such a massive honour,” Tengblad said. “I’ve loved being part of the U20s the past couple of years, and now I’m just really excited for the chance to step up, learn heaps, and contribute, in a fully professional environment over the next few seasons.”
Outside back, Stanley Solomon, is a product of Wellington College and made the New Zealand Schools team in 2022 and the New Zealand U20s in 2024 before making the first of his nine appearances for the Wellington Lions later that same year in the NPC. In the most recent World Cup in Italy Solomon played both fullback and wing and has played for Wellington in the opening rounds of the NPC.
Solomon is keen to have a crack at Super Rugby.
“I am buzzing to join the Highlanders, and I can’t wait to rip in, earn respect and represent the South with pride. It’s time to get to work,” said Solomon.
Highlanders Head Coach, Jamie Joseph, said the signings reinforce the club’s commitment to nurturing emerging talent.
“We’ve been watching Dylan, Josh and Stanley closely – they’re all outstanding young men who have absolutely earned this opportunity. What they’ve achieved in their short rugby careers demonstrates they have the temperament and skill to take the next step in their professional careers. We’re excited to welcome them into the Highlanders environment.”
All three will join the Highlanders for pre-season training later this year.
Pledger and Solomon are signed for the 2026/27 seasons and Tengblad for 2027/28.
