HIGHLANDERS SCHOOL CAMP PLAYERS ANNOUNCE

26 September 2025

Secondary school rugby players from Otago, North Otago, and Southland will gather at John McGlashan College from 1 to 4 October for the Highlanders Schools Camp. Over four days, participants will train under the guidance of Highlanders Head Coach Jamie Joseph and assistant coaches Dave Kidwell, Ben Smith, Clarke Dermody, and Kane Jury. The camp will culminate in a match at 1pm on Saturday.

The 44 players represent 12 schools across the region and were selected following a competitive Southern Schools Rugby Championship, which was won this year by Southland Boys’ High School. Many of these athletes also competed in the recent six-team U18 competition, where Otago Metro emerged victorious in the final round last weekend.

Several players have already earned national recognition this season. Jimmy Taylor (SBHS) and Henry Hunter (King’s) were selected for the New Zealand Schools team, while Jake Hill (King’s) and Mason Coulthard (SBHS) were named in the NZ Barbarians squad. Additionally, Lafa Tofiga, Jeremiah Tuhega-Vaitupu (King’s), and Koen Rarere (SBHS) were chosen for the NZ Māori U18 team.

The Highlanders Schools Camp has a strong track record of developing future professional players, with alumni including Cam Millar, Finn Hurley, Josh Whaanga, Oli Haig, and Sean Withy. For many of the young athletes attending, the camp represents more than just a training opportunity, it’s a chance to be inspired by those who’ve walked the same path and turned their dreams into reality. Being coached by Highlanders Coaches and surrounded by top regional talent offers a glimpse into what’s possible for those willing to work hard and aim high.

Highlanders General Manager – Rugby Greg O’Brien expressed his enthusiasm for the increased involvement this year, noting that the expanded on-field presence of Highlanders coaches is designed to enhance the experience for the players and provide some insights into the professional game. Hopefully it’s an environment that fuels their ambition and reminds players that with dedication and belief, the professional level can be within reach.
