Highlanders and The Salvation Army Team Up to Support Critical Projects in Fiji

11 April 2025

The Salvation Army’s work in the Pacific continues to make a significant impact, with projects across Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa. In particular, The Salvation Army has recently celebrated 50 years of service in Fiji, where the need for support remains critical across various community initiatives. To assist with ongoing projects and bring further awareness to these efforts, The Salvation Army is pleased to announce a special partnership with the Highlanders.

At this weekend’s match against the Fijian Drua, 100% of the funds raised will be donated to support The Salvation Army’s work in Fiji. These funds will be collected through a bucket collection both before and after the game, providing fans the opportunity to contribute to vital community projects.

Additionally, all of the Highlanders' 23 Hulk playing jerseys, played on the 14th of March 2025, will be auctioned off on Trade Me starting Thursday, April 10, 2025, with bidding concluding on Thursday, April 17, 2025. The entire proceeds from the jersey auction will also go directly towards The Salvation Army’s projects in Fiji.

Lieutenant Sakeo Matakaruru, a Salvation Army officer based in Lautoka, Fiji, will be present at the game and has shared the growing challenges the country faces: “The Salvation Army is witnessing an increasing need in Fiji. In particular, the current drug crisis is worsening, and we are seeing its devastating effects on many, especially young children. Many of these children are also experiencing homelessness due to the surge in drug use, which has led to rising social issues, including an increase in HIV cases. Domestic violence remains a major concern, and we are working closely with families to provide support and resources.

“Fiji is also no stranger to hardship from natural weather events, and we must always be ready to help our people during times of distress. The funds raised from this game will go a long way in ensuring The Salvation Army can continue its vital work in Fiji. We are incredibly grateful for the support of the Highlanders, as well as the generosity of the public. Vinaka,” he added.

The Salvation Army has been active in Fiji for over five decades, responding to the country’s pressing needs through various programmes that support vulnerable communities, particularly children, families affected by substance abuse, and those in need of disaster relief.

Fans attending the Highlanders vs Fijian Drua match this weekend are encouraged to contribute generously to this important cause, and to participate in the jersey auction, helping to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need in Fiji.
