15 Years; Thousands of Memories 

15 years have flown by; time flies when you're having fun! Here are some of our favourite moments and events in the last 15 years.  

First Super Rugby Game: 

In 2012, the Highlanders played their first Super Rugby game at Forsyth Barr Stadium, in front of an excited crowd of 23,600 fans, and who better to beat than the Crusaders! The grand opening of the Highlanders' new home ground was successful as the Highlanders won 27-24.  

2015 Quarterfinal against the Chiefs:  

The Highlanders hosted their first home playoff since 1999 against the Chiefs in 2015. Cult hero Waisake Naholo scored a double to put the Highlanders into their first semifinal in over a decade, on the way to winning their first ever Super Rugby title. Naholo’s performance had the stadium in full voice as his name was chanted for the majority of the game (and continues to be!). 

Beating the British and Irish Lions  

In 2017 the Highlanders narrowly beat the famous touring British and Irish Lions 23-22 in front of a sold-out crowd. The significance of a Super Rugby team beating a side made up of the best players from four nations was an unforgettable moment for not only Highlanders fans, but all fans globally. 

Aaron Smith’s final Highlanders home game:

Aaron Smith played his final home game in 2023 in what was an emotional roller coaster as he ended his career as the most capped Highlander in club history. There was a sentimental passing of the torch moment as fellow halfback Folau Fakatava scored a last-minute try to beat the Reds 35-30. It was a perfect way to send off such an influential player of the Highlanders and Forsyth Barr Stadium.  

The Zoo: 

Each and every Highlanders game the Zoo provides entertainment, from costumes and silly antics. It's become an iconic section of the stadium. Watching what goes on in the zoo has provided amazing entertainment and a headache for security for close to 15 years, and long may it continue.  

World’s first major live sports event post Covid-19 

In 2020, the Highlanders hosted the first major live sports event after the pandemic lockdown, in what was Round 1 of Super Rugby Aotearoa. This was a special moment as it marked the first unrestricted crowd since the pandemic began and with 19,100 fans filling the stadium, it demonstrated not only how much live sport, but what the Highlanders and Super Rugby mean to the southern region.
