Sam Gilbert made the move down south to seek more game time at Super Rugby level in 2020. The versatile back made his Super Rugby debut that season against the Chiefs in the opening game of Super Rugby Aoteroa. Unfortunately, he suffered a knee injury the following game which put him out of all rugby until Round 10 of Sky Super Rugby Aotearoa.
He returned to play four games in the Trans-Tasman competition and started to look comfortable at this level. Sam is a product of St Andrew's College and was quickly inducted into the Canterbury Academy out of school.
His recent move to Otago could prove to be a winner as he will play alongside many of his Highlanders teammates. Look for Sam to play a huge role in the success of the southern-based province.
