Sam Gilbert made the move down south to seek more game time at Super Rugby level in 2020. The versatile back made his Super Rugby debut that season against the Chiefs in the opening game of Super Rugby Aotearoa. Unfortunately, he suffered a knee injury the following game which put him out of all rugby until Round 10 of Sky Super Rugby Aotearoa.
Sam had a solid 2022 season which culminated in a game where he started at first five and kicked 100% (8 conversions) before, in a cruel twist of fate, a poorly timed tackle the following game would see him red carded and sidelined for the last two rounds (which included the quarterfinal).
Sam finished the 2023 season with a selection into the All Blacsk XV Squad.
