Twin brother of Peter, Thomas Umaga-Jensen came to the Highlanders in 2017 for a change of scene in the wider training group. Umaga-Jensen then joined the University Rugby Club side in the Dunedin premier competition for some impressive appearances, and now plays for Otago in the Bunnings NPC. He made his debut for the Highlanders in 2018 against the Melbourne Rebels.

Many season-ending injures have restricted fans to see the best of Thomas but 2022 was his year to finally shine, and boy did he shine! An incredibly powerful and skilful runner, Thomas proved hard to contain in the mid-field and often required multiple opposition players to take him down. 

Thomas' efforts were rewarded with recognition from fans, players and coaches and he was awards the Fan Player of the Year, Player's player of the Year and Back of the Year at the annual Highlander's Awards.
