Jermaine Ainsley Returns to the Highlanders on Two Year Deal Through 2028

The Highlanders have confirmed that former international Jermaine Ainsley will return to the club for the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season, signing a two‑year contract that will keep him in the south through 2028.

Ainsley, Highlander #311, made 38 appearances for the club between 2022 and 2024 after earlier stints with the Western Force and Melbourne Rebels. The 30‑year‑old tighthead prop established himself as a powerful, technically sound scrummager with a high work rate and strong presence around the field.

Since leaving New Zealand, Ainsley has continued to develop his game in the French TOP 14, making 30 appearances for Lyon between 2024 and 2026 and adding further experience at elite club and international level.

Head Coach Jamie Joseph says Ainsley’s return is well‑timed as the squad continues to build toward 2027.

“Having Jermaine back is a major boost. He’s a competitor, he’s durable, and he’s played a lot of high‑level rugby. He’ll add leadership to our pack and help drive the standards we’re setting for 2027 and beyond.”

Ainsley says the opportunity to return to Dunedin was one he and his family were eager to take.

“My family and I are excited to be joining the Highlanders. I didn’t think I’d ever get the opportunity to play in New Zealand again, let alone for the Highlanders, so I’m really looking forward to this next chapter. I can’t wait to rip in with the team next season. It looks like a pretty strong squad that’s been growing over the last few seasons.”

Ainsley will link up with the Highlanders ahead of the 2027 preseason with his wife Emily and their children Keanu (4), Zion (1) and Maia (5 months).
