Rugby fans won’t have to wait long to get their first taste of Super Rugby in 2020 with the competition kicking off on Friday 31st January with the Blues at home to the Chiefs.

The Highlanders have drawn a bye in the first round but will be at home to the Sharks on Friday 7th February at the new kick off time of 7.05pm.

All 7.35pm games will now be played at 7.05pm (and 5.15pm at 4.45pm). The earlier kick off times are as a result of research conducted by New Zealand Rugby. When Super Rugby was introduced in 1996 the 7pm space was dominated by The Holmes show but has been identified by fans as their preferred time to watch and attend Super Rugby in New Zealand.

Pulse Energy Highlanders Marketing Manager, Amanda Gould, is positive about the change of times “the earlier kick-off time will potentially suit families, those that are travelling or folks who would prefer a little more time to celebrate a victory post-game. We’ve also listened to our fans who struggle to commit to a full season and have created a five-game Super Saturday Membership package and a four-game New Zealand Derby Membership Package which will go on sale this week.”

An early visit to South Africa in round six to play the Bulls is followed by a visit to Argentina to take on the well performed Jaguares. The first of the NZ derby games will be against the Crusaders on the 28th March followed by the Chiefs on Good Friday, the Blues on the 2nd May and the Hurricanes 16th May. The last home game will be against the Sunwolves.

After the first-round bye the team will not get another break until round ten although that does not bother Head Coach Aaron Mauger too much, “I am always reasonably philosophical about any draw as there are always various aspects that go for or against you. In this competition you have to be ready to play anyone, anywhere at any time”.
