Faddes, like backs coach Tony Brown, grew up in South Otago and has been playing for Otago since 2011, debuting against North Harbour. Faddes concentrated on fifteens rugby in 2015 after having had a stint with Sevens where he was called into New Zealand Sevens team in 2013 and ended up helping them to a world series win in London. Faddes has played most of his rugby at wing or fullback but made the centre position his own during the 2015 ITM cup campaign for Otago where he had a stand-out season, using his pace and strength to score a number of tries throughout the season. Faddes said when asked about joining the Highlanders, “I’m stoked to be playing for the Highlanders in 2016. It has always been a dream of mine from a young age coming from South Otago. Just really looking forward to next year’s opportunities”. Matt had a stand-out season for the Highlanders and walked away with Highlanders Rookie and Player of the year awards and has been selected for the Barbarians in their Autumn tour. His ability to play wing, fullback or centre makes him a valuable member of the team.
