Luke is the youngest Whitelock brother and has bucked the family trend of playing for the Crusaders, opting to move futher south and play for the other Super Rugby club located on the mainland. He is a loose forward like former Crusader and eldest brother George, but specialises at No 8. Whitelock was a stand-out performer in 2016, he showed his versatility by starting at lock and shares the number eight role with Liam Squire. He is a relable, consistent, hard-working leader who led the Canterbury Mitre 10 Cup team to yet another victory.

The 25-year-old has two Junior World Championship titles to his name, winning in 2010 and again in 2011 as captain of the New Zealand U20 team. Following an impressive 2013 season with the Crusaders, Whitelock was called up for the All Blacks' end of year tour and made his Test debut against Japan in Tokyo. Rugby is certainly in the Whitelock genes. His father, Braeden, was a former junior All Black; maternal grandfather, Nelson Dalzell, played 17 games for the All Blacks; his wife, Shirley, was the sister of Canterbury and All Black team-mate Allan Elsom; Nelson's son, Anthony, played for Canterbury as a loose forward; and his son-in-law, Graeme Higginson, was an All Black lock in the 1980s. Not to mention his professional rugby playing brothers Adam, George and Sam, plus cousin and Crusaders teammate, Ben Funnel!
