Biography

Joe Wheeler will play his fifth season with the Highlanders in 2017 after being selected from the Tasman ITM Cup team where he has been an integral part of the Makos' forward pack since 2008. Wheeler can play both lock and loose forward which gives his coaches additional options at selection time. Joe is a skillful lock, great team man and consistent performer on and off the field. He has spent the off season in Japan playing for the Suntory and will rejoin the squad in early 2017. He was born in Christchurch and was part of the Crusaders' set-up from 2010-12 and has made 52 Super Rugby appearances. Wheeler has great chat and is the face of Highlanders TV, after his playing days are behind him he hopes to pursue a career as a rugby commentator or radio presenter.
