The Chiefs represent the five provincial unions that occupy the upper middle portion of the North Island – these being the South Auckland-based Counties Manukau, Thames Valley, Bay of Plenty, King Country and the franchise’s host provincial union, Waikato. The franchise’s catchment area stretches from the Southern motorway in Auckland city down to the waters edge of Lake Taupo in the central North Island. Counties Manukau and Thames Valley were previously affiliated to the Blues. The current franchise makeup was established in 1999. The Northland and North Harbour provincial unions contributed to the first three years of the Chiefs prior to being realigned with the Blues.
