Shane comes to the Highlanders with a wealth of playing experience having played 30 games for the Highlanders (2014-17) in which time he was selected for the Maori All Blacks.
After retiring in 2018 he moved straight into the Tasman Mako coaching team and it netted immediate rewards. Tasman made it into the semifinals in 2018 and won the premiership in 2019 and 2020.
Shane will continue to look after the Highlanders defence in 2022.
"A lot of defence is about attitude and Shane has a very competitive attitude and he loves to win — in other words he hates to lose, which I like as a motivating factor." - Head Coach Tony Brown.
