Born in Miramar, Wellington, Marino Mikaele Tu'u moved to Hastings when he was 11 years old. Mikaele Tu'u began playing competitive rugby when he made the Hastings Boys' High School First XV in 2013 as a Year 11 student. In 2014, Marino was selected for the New Zealand Barbarians and in the following year, was selected for the New Zealand Schools side at No.8. In 2016, Marino made his Hawke's Bay debut in the Mitre 10 Cup against Canterbury and was also again selected for the 2017 squad.
Marino had a few opportunities in 2019 but burst onto the scene with impressive performances throughout 2020. However, an injury at the start of 2021 meant the explosive backrower was unable to continue his rich reign of form.
He will go back to Hawkes Bay in search of some more minutes so he can get back to the level everyone knows he is capable of.
