After a bit of back and forth in the opening quarter, the Highlanders took control in the second with three well constructed tries to Renata, Franklin and Spence.  It was a great spectacle for the 400-odd crowd with some end to end running rugby. Japan showed some fight in the backs and the forwards and if it wasn't for a dropped pass here and there they would have a bit more on the scoreboard.  For the Highlanders Ensor and Moffat are the pick of the backs in the first 40mintes while Franklin and Blake played well up front. The Highlanders dominated the second half running in another six tries while the visitors managed only a solitary five pointer. Japan did everything they could to stem the onslaught but the Highlanders Development XV were on fire. For the visitors winger Kenki Fukuoka and reserve outside back Rikiya Matsuda were the standouts making big meters with ball in hand.  The best on show for the Highlanders after 80 minutes was captain Paul Grant who made some huge busts while Tony Ensor was weaving his magic from the backs.  Hayden Parker was kicking goals from all over the show finishing with a 100% record kicking over 9 conversions.
