Liam Squire Announces Retirement

13 October 2021

Highlanders loose forward Liam Squire (Highlander #242) has announced his retirement from all rugby effective immediately. Squire was forced out of the 2022 Sky Super Rugby Aotearoa competition in round 3 after a long-term right knee injury flared up. On the advice of his surgeon and knee specialist it was felt it was in Squire’s best interest to retire from professional rugby.

Highlanders assistant coach, Clarke Dermody, said, “Liam’s physical style of play made him a huge asset to any forward pack, and he was a real threat on attack and defence. I know he worked very hard to get back to fitness last season but unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be. We wish him all the best for the next stage of his life.”

Squire played 35 games for the Highlanders between 2016 and 2021 and 24 games for the All Blacks from 2016 and 2019.
